ABIM Foundation Awards Nearly $500,000 to Advance Medical Professionalism

The ABIM Foundation awarded nearly $500,000 in grants to support five projects through its Professionalism in Action grant program, nearly doubling the $250,000 originally planned for the new program in response to the breadth and depth of proposals received.

Selected projects reflect the range of challenges facing health care today and explore how medical professionalism can help clinicians, organizations, and communities navigate complex issues such as artificial intelligence, health misinformation, and reproductive health care.

“The response to this grant program demonstrated just how relevant medical professionalism is to many of the issues shaping health care today,” said Jessica Perlo, MPH, Executive Vice President of the ABIM Foundation. “We received so many thoughtful and compelling proposals that we decided to increase our original investment. These projects will help us better understand what professionalism looks like in practice in a changing health care environment and how it can build trust and improve care.”

The selected projects are:

• NYC REACH at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will develop and test an “informed accompaniment” framework to help community health workers support patients as they navigate increasingly complex health information environments. The project will explore how health information influences patients’ decisions and help patients evaluate whether the information they encounter supports their individual health goals.
• NYU Grossman School of Medicine will expand and evaluate the Professionalism, Ethics, and Real-world Leadership Simulations (PEARLS) program, which uses simulations to help learners navigate situations where trust, equity, and accountability are at stake. The project will broaden the curriculum to address emerging professionalism challenges and expand its use across medical education.
• Ryan Program at the University of California, San Francisco will examine how medical professionalism can support physicians and trainees navigating abortion training across state lines, including the professional obligations and challenges that arise when clinicians work across different legal and institutional environments.
• University of Colorado School of Medicine will develop a professionalism-based framework for the responsible use of workforce data in health care. The project will explore how organizations can use workforce data in ways that balance organizational needs with professional values, trust, and responsible stewardship.
• University of North Carolina School of Medicine will develop an AI-supported simulation curriculum to help pediatric trainees navigate challenging situations in adolescent health care. Through reflection and simulation, the project will explore how clinicians can apply professional values when caring for adolescents in increasingly complex legal, social, and clinical environments.
